Walking into my English 1A class, I didn’t
know what to except. I had mixed feelings and really didn’t want to take this
English class, but it was a GE requirement. As I sat down I looked around and
too my surprise I noticed how diverse the students were. I also was amazed and
shocked to see that my English teacher was a young black woman with so much
passion and will to teach her students. It was a nice warming experience and
after my first day of class I was happy I choose to take this class. The
community service project was something that surprised me. This was because I
failed to read the syllabus thoroughly. After taking a closer look at the
project requirements I had mixed feelings on which group I wanted to be a part
of. I started off in one group, but eventually decided on the Intel Group. Soon
other classmates ventured over to join the team. It seemed like the project
would be fun and I was a part of a good team. We exchange numbers and emails so
we could work on the project. Weeks went past and no one brought up the
project. Over the spring break the teacher told us to get together and come up
with some ideas about the project to present to the class, but no one reached
out. Being the perfectionist that I am I decided to start researching surveys
and gathering information to present to the team. Overall, this community
service learning project was a way to build relationships with the community
along with my teammates. It came with trials and tribulations, but as a group
we worked out the kinks and presented a well put together show case. This
project in my opinion was a test to explore our strengths and weaknesses and to
see how well we work together collaboratively. In today's, society we spend too
much time on our phones or on social media that we are missing important events
going on right in front of us. Because of this show case this has brought
change in the community and allowed them to experience and encourage them to be
more socially conscious and woke in their own community.
Attending the 11th
Annual Eco-Fest Sustainability Festival was an amazing experience. I enjoyed
being greeted with great music, food, and samba dancers. I like that the
community is becoming more woke and willing to be exposed to new hip hop. The
Hip Hop for Change Inc. was very inspirational. The artist, Khafre Jay caught
my attention the most. His spoken rap sent a message through his lyrics that
was powerful and express real life experiences. In my experience his lyrics
gave the listener a different way to look at other rap artists. Overall, this
project was insightful and allowed me to be a part of something bigger than all
of us. It was a good opportunity for us all to come together and learn from
each other. It allowed us to work collaboratively and to examine peoples
feeling about certain issues within the community. I learned that society needs
to be more socially conscious and not just settle for the mainstream artists we
hear every day. Because of this I really want to take a closer look at the
underground artists that not everyone knows about. I want to spread the world
and express my gratitude for the experiences I had while in this class. This
semester was a challenge but in all I had a good semester and am proud to have
been a part of a remarkable team.
