Here's a flyer one of our classmates created especially for the showcase.
Before I attended this class I assumed it was going to be any other English class, that we would be assigned homework every week based on weekly reading but I came to realize that this particular class was more interesting than I thought and it was certainly a fun experience. For this class, the professor used service learning to provide a better learning environment for the students. Service learning is a process of having students do community service that is combined with facilitated means for applying that experience to their own academic and personal skills and development. It is a form of education aimed at enhancing and enriching student learning in the course material to provide a good learning experience and giving them proper motivation to complete their assignments. In my opinion I think that service learning has helped the class a lot because Hip Hop which is the topic that we used for our workshops and essays throughout the semester is a subject that a majority of people are familiar with and enjoy. There are so many ways that people can add to the subject because of how much they enjoy the music.
One of the assignments that I had to do this semester was working with a group to create a survey on how much people like and enjoy Hip Hop. We all were pretty invested into this project because Hip Hop was a subject that we understood and were familiar with. We would all come up with questions on why people like Hip Hop and what they felt about it and then we would go around campus or outside of campus to ask different people what their thoughts are. It was also a fun project too and it shows how service learning can help students be better motivated to do their work in class.
